Starmer’s resignation: Obi asks Tinubu to step down over ‘governance failures’

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to resign.

He accused his administration of failing to deliver effective governance amid worsening economic hardship and insecurity in the country.

In a statement shared on his official X account on Monday, Obi referenced the recent resignation announcement by Keir Starmer, British Prime Minister, describing it as an example of political accountability that should be emulated in Nigeria.

Obi said he had reflected on Starmer’s decision and what he termed the importance of leadership responsibility in democratic governance, arguing that leaders must be held accountable when they fail to meet public expectations.

He compared the situation in the United Kingdom with Nigeria’s political experience, recalling that Tinubu, during his time in opposition, had once demanded the resignation of former President Goodluck Jonathan over insecurity, particularly during the Chibok schoolgirls’ abduction.

According to Obi, the current administration had made several campaign promises in 2023, including improved electricity supply, stronger anti-corruption measures, and better living conditions for citizens, but had failed to deliver on them.

He claimed that instead, Nigerians were facing worsening power supply challenges, rising insecurity, and deepening economic hardship across the country.

Obi further argued that key sectors such as infrastructure, transportation, and governance reforms had not seen meaningful progress under the present administration.

Describing the situation as critical, he said Nigeria was “in the worst possible condition” and urged Nigerians of goodwill to demand accountability from those in leadership.

He called for the president’s resignation, insisting that such a step would promote a culture of responsibility in public office and reinforce the principle that leadership is a public trust rather than a personal entitlement.
