“Tinubu’s mother still serves Nigeria through her son” – Shettima

Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima has said the late Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji, mother of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, continues to serve Nigeria through the values and leadership qualities she instilled in her son.

Shettima said this while representing Tinubu at the Annual Grand Prayer Session held in honour of the late Iyaloja-General of Nigeria at the National Mosque in Abuja on Sunday, June 21, 2026.

He described the president’s late mother as a woman whose influence transcended her family and helped shape the nation’s moral imagination.

The revered market leader died on June 15, 2013, at the age of 96.

According to Shettima, her leadership was measured not by noise but by “the lives she lifted and the institutions she strengthened.”

“It should surprise no one that the son she raised carries the same fire into the highest office in our land.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu learned at her side that public life is a trust and that leadership is owed first to the ordinary and the unheard,” Shettima said.

The Vice President highlighted the “like mother, like son” parallel, noting that the instincts for democracy, service to the common good, and standing up for citizens were kindled in the home where Alhaja Mogaji made service a daily example.

“She turned scattered effort into collective strength,” he added, praising her decades of work empowering market women, protecting livelihoods, mediating disputes, and defending the weak.

Shettima prayed for the repose of her soul and for comfort for President Tinubu and the entire family, asking Allah to make her legacy “an enduring source of good for this nation she loved.”
