A Ghana National Fire Service officer narrowly escaped being swept away by powerful floodwaters while attempting to carry out a rescue operation at Dabala Junction in the Volta Region, in a dramatic episode that has since circulated widely on social media.
Footage of the incident shows the officer, dressed in fire service protective gear, wading through fast-moving, chest-deep brown floodwater while gripping a rope tethered to a rescue buoy.
A fully submerged vehicle is visible nearby, with floodwater reaching close to the rooftops of surrounding buildings, illustrating the severity of the flooding in the area.
The footage captures the considerable danger faced by the officer as the current visibly strained against his body, with social media users noting the irony and gravity of a trained rescuer himself coming dangerously close to needing rescue.
It remains unclear whether the officer was able to complete the original rescue mission he had been deployed for, or the full extent of the flooding’s impact on residents of Dabala Junction and the surrounding Volta Region community.
The incident adds to a growing list of flood-related emergencies reported across Ghana in recent days, with severe flooding also recorded in Accra, including at Achimota Mile 7, Kwame Nkrumah Circle, and the University of Ghana’s Mensah Sarbah Hall.
