A Ghanaian lady renting accommodation in the Greater Accra Region has expressed deep frustration after her rented room was completely submerged in floodwater following this week’s heavy rains, with footage showing the extent of the damage to her personal belongings.
Video of the flooded room shows brown floodwater covering the entire floor, with shelves of clothing and personal items visible just above the waterline.
A separate clip shows a shoe floating freely near the doorway, illustrating how thoroughly the rising water infiltrated the living space.
“You spend so much on rent in Accra only to have your room flooded,” the tenant said, capturing a frustration shared by many renters across the capital following this week’s flooding disaster.
The incident adds a deeply personal dimension to Accra’s ongoing flood crisis, highlighting the financial vulnerability faced by tenants who pay significant sums for accommodation only to have their possessions destroyed by inadequate drainage infrastructure during heavy rainfall.
It remains unclear what compensation, if any, is available to tenants whose rented properties are damaged by flooding, as Ghana’s tenancy laws do not typically obligate landlords to cover losses arising from natural disasters unless specified in lease agreements.
This week’s flooding has affected numerous parts of Accra, including Kwame Nkrumah Circle, Achimota Mile 7, the Spintex to Polo Grounds corridor, and the University of Ghana’s Mensah Sarbah Hall, with thousands of residents reporting damage to homes and belongings.
