You cannot use Islam to shield your lack of political will – Nigerian Doctor calls out Matawalle for saying only God can end Nigeria’s banditry

A Nigerian medical doctor Elamin Alamin has criticised recent remarks attributed to Nigeria’s Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, that “only God can end Nigeria’s insecurity.”

In the video he shared, he accused political leaders of using religion to deflect responsibility for tackling banditry and violence.

The commentator expressed frustration over the country’s worsening security situation, arguing that citizens are being asked to rely solely on faith while communities continue to suffer attacks. “Today we are told only Allah and prayers can bring an end to banditry. We are shown road construction reports while our sisters and families are killed and violated.”

He also criticised attempts to blame political opponents for public dissatisfaction with insecurity. “When we cry out in rage, they blame the opposition for fuelling our anger. We are not political pawns, we are a grieving people.”

While acknowledging the role of faith, the commentator argued that religion should not be used as a shield against accountability. “Yes, we know Allah has the supreme power, but you cannot use Islam to shield your lack of political will. That is not just bad governance, it is also destruction of the deen according to the Qur’an.”

According to him, Islamic teachings emphasise the importance of combining prayer with practical effort and responsibility. “They ask us to pray but forget that Allah ties His intervention to our effort.” He cited a verse from the Qur’an to support his argument. “Allah does not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves.”

The commentator also referenced an account involving Prophet Muhammad, saying the Prophet encouraged both faith and action rather than reliance on prayer alone. “The Prophet Mohammed did not just tell a follower to put their faith in God, but He also told them to carry out an action.”

He argued that government officials have a duty to take concrete steps against insecurity. “You cannot leave the gates open for bandits and then fold your hands on a prayer mat and say Allah will fix it.” Drawing a distinction between the responsibilities of citizens and those of leaders, he added: “Prayer is our action as victims, strategic action is your mandatory duty as leaders.”

The speaker also reminded politicians that they sought public support during elections based on promises of leadership and governance. “You did not ask us to just pray when you asked for our votes during campaigns.”

He concluded by urging leaders to stop exploiting religion and instead focus on protecting citizens. “Stop using our faith against us, we know our Islam. It demands justice. Do your job and protect our lives. If you can’t, leave it for those who can.”
