Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has penned an open letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, calling for direct talks between the two nations to bring the conflict to a close.
In the letter, Zelensky urges Putin that “Ukraine proposes to end this war”, adding that it would be a mistake to wait for the United States and Donald Trump, who are “fully focused on the issue of Iran.” The Kremlin has since confirmed it has received the letter.
In it, Zelensky writes: “The choice is yours now. Enough of war. Ukraine proposes to end this war. This must be done honestly, with dignity, and with guarantees that the war will not be reignited.
“We see that the United States is fully focused on the issue of Iran, and it would be wrong to simply wait until the war in Europe returns to the center of its attention.
“Ukraine proposes ending this war through direct engagement between us – and you. I am proposing a meeting.”
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that officials had seen the letter dispatched by Zelensky earlier today.
According to TASS, Peskov indicated that Putin would be briefed on its contents shortly, stating: “Yes, we saw it; he published it during the presidential event. The president hasn’t had the opportunity to review it yet.
“This will be reported to the president after the working portion of the Uzbek president’s visit is completed.” Putin launched his “special military operation” in February 2024, sending his forces into Ukraine in a bid to seize control of the country.
Since then, fierce battles have raged across Ukrainian territory, with no indication that the conflict is drawing to a close.

Russian forces continue to bombard Ukraine on a daily basis, with Zelensky’s letter representing one of the most significant gestures towards potential peace negotiations since US President Donald Trump dispatched his special envoys in an attempt to broker an end to hostilities.
Yet despite Zelensky’s apparent readiness to pursue peace, he reserved pointed words for Putin, warning that Ukraine would press on with its fight should the Russian leader fail to “personally come to the conclusion that it is time to end this war”.
Zelensky continued: “You know that the United States has the capability to monitor a ceasefire along the line where hostilities stop. Ukraine is ready for an all-for-all exchange of prisoners of war, and this could become a good prologue to ending the war.

“Serious steps must be taken to return civilians and children who were taken away during the war. We must determine what kind of future awaits the generations of Ukrainians and Russians who will come after us.
“If you do not personally come to the conclusion that it is time to end this war, Ukraine will continue fighting for its existence. We will have those who support us.
“But you, too, will have to fight much harder for your own existence – not Russia’s, but your own. And this is not a threat from me or from Ukraine. It is a fact of Russian history that you know well: when Russia grows tired, change comes. We can work toward that fatigue. You can stop your war.
He added, “Eternal memory to all those whose lives were taken by this war.”
