ZLP senatorial aspirant promises citizen-centred representation for FCT residents

Professor Festus Asikhia has pledged to champion citizen-centred representation and responsive governance as he seeks to represent the Federal Capital Territory in the Senate under the platform of the Zenith Labour Party.

Asikhia said his aspiration is driven by a desire to promote economic growth, strengthen accountability and ensure that residents of the FCT have a stronger voice in governance.

In a statement on Saturday, he stressed that leadership should be focused on addressing the needs of the people through practical solutions and active engagement with citizens.

“Governance must be people-oriented and responsive to the needs of residents,” Asikhia said.

“My commitment is to provide citizen-centred representation that ensures every resident has a voice and that government institutions remain accountable to the people they serve,” he said

The senatorial aspirant disclosed plans to establish a Federal Capital Territory Direct Complaint Secretariat if elected, describing it as a platform through which residents can communicate their concerns directly to government authorities.

“The proposed Direct Complaint Secretariat will create a direct channel between residents and government agencies. Citizens deserve timely responses to their concerns, and public institutions must be accessible, transparent and accountable,” he said

Asikhia also emphasised the importance of knowledge-driven leadership and enterprise development in addressing Nigeria’s economic challenges, including unemployment and poverty.

“Knowledge-driven leadership and enterprise development remain vital for economic growth, We need leaders who understand wealth creation, human capital development and the practical realities of governance,’’ he said

He noted that his experience in entrepreneurship, particularly in the housing sector, has provided him with insights into job creation and economic development.

Through the Festrut Group of Companies, Asikhia has led initiatives aimed at expanding access to affordable housing while creating employment opportunities across the construction sector.

According to him, housing development remains a strategic tool for stimulating economic growth.

“Housing is not just about providing shelter; it is a catalyst for job creation, infrastructure development and broader economic activities,” he said.

Beyond his business interests, Asikhia has built a career in academia and public service, holding leadership positions in several educational institutions and contributing to research in governance, leadership and social development.

He said his multidisciplinary background has equipped him with the skills required to contribute meaningfully to policy formulation and legislative oversight.

“My focus is on creating opportunities, empowering people and advancing policies that improve the quality of life of residents. The FCT deserves representation that listens, engages and delivers results,” Asikhia said.

As political activities ahead of the next election cycle gather momentum, Asikhia said his campaign would focus on issues affecting residents, including economic empowerment, infrastructure development, housing and effective service delivery.

“We must build a governance system where citizens are partners in development. That is the foundation of sustainable progress and inclusive growth,” Asikhia said.
