52 Year Old Woman Arraigned Over Alleged ₦700k House Fraud

Aletor Josephine, a 52-year-old lady, was hauled before the Ejigbo Magistrate Court on Thursday on charges of theft in relation to a rented residence in Igando and acquiring money under false pretenses.

The Commissioner of Police brought the defendant before the court on three counts of stealing, fr@ud, and conduct likely to provoke a breach of the peace.

The charging document states that the alleged crime took place on April 16, 2026, in the Lagos Magisterial District’s Akesan neighborhood of Igando.

The first count accused her of dishonestly obtaining the sum of ₦700,000 from one Olubukola Fakunle with intent to defr@ud, an offence said to be punishable under Section 314(3) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.

The second count alleged that on the same date, time and place, she stole the same sum, described as the property of Olubukola Fakunle, contrary to Section 280 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.

The third count accused her of unlawfully conducting herself in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace, with the prosecution claiming she rented out a room and parlour mini flat to the complainant despite knowing she was not the owner of the property.

The charge sheet was presented in court by Police Officer ACP Abaniwonda Tokunbo, psc, with the Investigating Police Officer listed as ASP Ajilade Abmbala of Area ‘M’ Command, Idimu, Lagos. When the charges were read to her, the defendant pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor, ASP Simon Njue, asked the court for a hearing date to enable the police to prove the allegations.

The presiding Magistrate, Mrs F.R. Ogunkoyede, granted her bail with two sureties, who are required to provide evidence of means of livelihood and tax payment.

Following the bail ruling, the defendant was remanded in custody at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre pending the perfection of her bail conditions.

The complainant, Olubukola Fakunle, had earlier reported the matter to the police, alleging that she paid ₦700,000 for accommodation based on representations made by the defendant.

Under Nigerian law, every accused person is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a competent court.

The matter was adjourned for mention to enable the defendant to meet her bail conditions as stipulated by the court.
