Adeshina, Onojuvwevwo land in Glasgow as athletics begins

Two of Nigeria’s medal prospects in athletics at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, Temitope Adeshina and Ella Onojuvwevwo, have arrived in Glasgow as track and field events begin on Monday (today), PidomNigeria Sports Extra reports.
The US-based athletes joined Team Nigeria’s camp at separate times over the weekend.
Adeshina, the Nigerian record holder in the women’s high jump, will be competing at her second Commonwealth Games after making her debut at Birmingham 2022.
The 27-year-old had been a doubt for the Games due to travel issues, but those concerns were resolved following her arrival on Saturday.
Adeshina enjoyed an outstanding 2026 NCAA season, remaining unbeaten while winning all available indoor and outdoor titles. She heads into the Games with a season’s best clearance of 1.97m and is widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s top medal prospects in the field events.
For Onojuvwevwo, the LSU athlete will be making her Commonwealth Games debut and is expected to feature in the women’s 4x400m relay event.
The 21-year-old arrives in Glasgow in excellent form, having posted a season’s best of 49.47 seconds in the women’s 400m.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s quest for more athletics medals begins today with the men’s 100m heats, where reigning national champion Favour Ashe and Fakorede Adekalu will be aiming to secure places in the semi-finals.
Miracle Ezechukwu will also compete in the women’s 100m heats, while Sade Olatoye will feature in the women’s hammer throw and Eucharia Iyiazi in the women’s F57 para shot put event.
