Alaafin adjusts Oro festival restriction to accommodate BECE students

The Alaafin of Oyo and Paramount Ruler of the Oyo Kingdom, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, has approved a slight modification in this year’s Oro Festival, which commenced from Thursday, July 23, to Wednesday, July 29, 2026.

The approval was announced in a statement issued by the Director of Media and Publicity to the Alaafin, Bode Durojaiye.

According to the statement, the slight adjustment was to accommodate candidates participating in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

“The modification is a sequel to the Basic Education Certificate Examination for Junior Secondary School 3 (Basic 9) students required to transition to Senior Secondary School, which coincides with the festival.

“It is administered by the state Ministries of Education or the West African Examination Council or the National Examination Council, depending on the region.”

Announcing the new development in the festival, the Baale of Jabata, Orowale Ajani, said, “The female students should note that restrictions of movement placed on them on the last day of the festival, which is 29th of this month, have been shifted till 5 pm, to enable concerned pupils write the national examinations.”
