Alausa to present Tinubu’s education scorecard at Abuja summit

The Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Alausa, will on Wednesday present the Federal Government’s three-year scorecard on education reforms under President Bola Tinubu’s administration as policymakers, education experts and development partners gather in Abuja to assess progress and chart the sector’s future.

Alausa is expected to lead discussions at the 2026 Education Summit organised by the Education Correspondents Association of Nigeria, where stakeholders will review the administration’s achievements, reforms and persisting challenges since President Tinubu assumed office in May 2023.

The summit, scheduled to hold at the Barcelona Hotel, Wuse II, Abuja, is themed, “Three Years of the Tinubu Administration: Assessing Reforms, Progress, and Challenges in Nigeria’s Education Sector.”

In a statement issued on Monday, the Chairman of the Education Correspondents Association of Nigeria, Chux Ukwuatu, said the summit would provide an opportunity for a critical appraisal of the administration’s education policies while fostering dialogue on the future of the sector.

“The summit will bring together policymakers, education experts, academics, development partners and media professionals to assess the impact of the Tinubu administration’s education reforms and explore strategies for addressing the sector’s remaining challenges,” Ukwuatu said.

He added that the Minister of Education would declare the summit open, while participants would include representatives of government institutions, education agencies, academia, development partners, school administrators, researchers, civil society organisations, student bodies and the media.

According to him, the event is designed to promote evidence-based policy discussions and strengthen collaboration among stakeholders committed to improving educational outcomes in Nigeria.

Beyond the policy discussions, the summit will also recognise individuals and institutions that have made significant contributions to advancing education and human capital development.

The summit comes amid ongoing reforms by the Federal Ministry of Education aimed at improving access, quality and governance across the education sector.

Over the past three years, the Federal Government has launched the Nigerian Education Loan Fund to expand access to tertiary education, introduced measures to reduce the number of out-of-school children, strengthened quality assurance and accountability in schools, intensified reforms in technical and vocational education, and initiated curriculum reviews to align learning with 21st-century skills and labour market demands.

The ministry has also rolled out nationwide learning assessments to measure pupils’ academic performance, expanded digital education initiatives, promoted research and innovation through partnerships with agencies such as the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, and advanced reforms across the basic, secondary and tertiary education levels.

The ECAN summit is expected to provide one of the first comprehensive stakeholder assessments of these initiatives, highlighting achievements, implementation gaps and priorities for the next phase of the Tinubu administration’s education agenda.
