Man demands N530,000 from divorce seeking wife

Kaduna: A woman, Aisha Yunusa, on Monday, dragged husband, Idris Yaqub to a Shari’a Court at Magajin Gari, Kaduna, seeking divorce.

The complainant through her lawyer, Abubakar Ishaq, said she was no longer in love with her husband and cannot stay in the marriage, and prayed the court to dissolve the marriage through Khul’i.

Khul’i is a type of divorce where a woman returns the dowry paid during her marriage to the husband in exchange for her freedom.

She told the court that N50,000 was paid as her dowry during the wedding and she was ready to return it.

The defendant said through his lawyer, Abdulrashid Musa, that he would collect the dowry but he wanted that defendant to return N200,000 for clothes, accessories he bought for her.

‎According to the defendant’s counsel, the complainant left with some household items like chairs, curtains and fridge worth N330,000, making a total of N530,000.

‎The judge, Malam Yakubu Abdullahi, said in Islam, a woman has the right to seek a divorce through Khul’i.

“The dowry that was paid is the only thing that the complainant is supposed to pay in Islam. Gifts and expenses given during the marriage are excluded ” he said.

The Judge ruled that Yaqub had no valid reason as to why the complainant would pay N530,000, stating that all those things were related to tradition not Islam.

He therefore dissolved the marriage and asked Yunusa to pay only the N50,00 dowry immediately.(NAN)
