Before They Opened a Cafe, Their Partnership Was Already Baked in.

On June 4, 2023, the day after Christopher Charles Sidwell’s birthday, he met Micaéla Verrelien for drinks at Yours Sincerely, a cocktail bar in Brooklyn’s Bushwick neighborhood. They had matched on Hinge; neither was looking for anything serious.

“Her profile was more casual and straightforward and less about trying to be mysterious,” Sidwell said. “After dating for a while, you get exhausted by the mysteries people try to play.”

“When I was dating, I never had dinner dates with just anyone, only drinks. It’s my rule of thumb,” Verrelien said. “But with Christopher, one drink turned to three.”

On June 18, Sidwell arranged a car to pick Verrelien up from her apartment in Bedford-Stuyvesant for their first official date at Le Crocodile, a French brasserie at the Wythe Hotel in Williamsburg. He chose that restaurant knowing about her French background as a Haitian woman.

“It just showed me that he was an intentional person, and that this date mattered to him,” she said.

Over chicken, fries, and cocktails, they talked until the restaurant closed. “From when I first met him, I was so inspired at how fearless and entrepreneurial he was,” Verrelien said. “I actually prayed for someone like this.”

At the time, Verrelien was a full-time content creator and TV host. “One thing that struck me, it wasn’t just the conversation, it was how present she was,” Sidwell said. “Her phone was completely absent the entire time, and she’s a social media influencer.”

After dinner, they continued the date upstairs at the bar. “We didn’t want the night to end and were committed to learning more about each other,” he said.

They saw each other almost every day, and on June 25, they became exclusive.

Soon after, the two combined their professional lives, conceptualizing Sweet Fire Café & Studio, a vegan cafe, bakery, and event space in Williamsburg. The idea began after Sidwell, who had been selling vegan baked goods under the Sweet Fire name since 2017, noticed how much Verrelien was spending on studio rentals for shoots. Though he had long resisted opening a cafe of his own, she was the reason he reconsidered.

“People love who she is, her light, and she could be there 100 percent for everybody, every day, which I truly can’t,” he said. “It couldn’t have existed if it wasn’t with her.”

“We both used everything we had to do this,” Verrelien said. “We had no investors, just us and a dream.”

Verrelien, 34, grew up in Brockton, Mass., and has a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. She is a fashion and lifestyle content creator, in addition to co-owning Sweet Fire Café & Studio.

Sidwell, 35, grew up in Franklin, N.J., and studied economics at Rutgers University. He is the chef, baker, and co-owner of Sweet Fire Café & Studio.

While they were building the space, Verrelien’s mother was in her seventh year of waiting for a kidney transplant. Sidwell accompanied Verrelien on trips to Boston whenever he could. “Anytime she wanted to go see her, we would,” he said.

On July 1, 2024, when they opened the cafe to the public, her mother received the call that a matching kidney became available. She underwent a successful transplant the following day.

Less than a year later, on March 7, 2025, Verrelien’s oldest sister unexpectedly died in her sleep. “I’ve been going through a lot of grief,” Verrelien said. “He has been a huge rock.”

“It opens your reality and your empathy to understand that this could happen to anybody at any time,” he said.

On June 5, 2025, while vacationing in Puerto Rico, Sidwell proposed to Verrelien with a princess-cut diamond ring. A month later, she moved into Sidwell’s apartment in Williamsburg, where they currently reside.

They were married on July 7 at the New York City Marriage Bureau, where Yanfang Chen, a city clerk, officiated. Sydney Shaw, the couple’s photographer, served as their witness. Verrelien wore a custom gown by the Haitian designer Waina Chancy of Atelier Ndigo as a tribute to her heritage.

Afterward, the newlyweds celebrated with Sidwell’s parents over champagne and dinner at Eno Terra, an Italian restaurant in Kingston, N.J. Verrelien sent photos and videos to her mother throughout the day.

“I knew I wanted to marry Christopher once we decided to open a business together,” she said. “We created this baby together, and we survived the other side.”

Next month, they will celebrate with 80 guests in Florence, Italy, as a nod to Sidwell’s Italian heritage.
