The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Kano State Command, has secured the conviction of a 28-year-old man who was found guilty of advertising cannabis for sale on social media.
The Media and Advocacy Officer of the command, Sadiq Muhammad Maigatari, who disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, said the Federal High Court in Kano sentenced Ashiru Idris to seven years in prison.
“The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) today commends the Federal High Court, Kano, for delivering a landmark judgment in a matter arising from public advertisement and sale of cannabis sativa,” the statement read.
“On 22 April 2026, operatives of the NDLEA Kano Strategic Command, acting on the directive of the State Commander, CN DY Lawal, arrested one Ashiru Idris (m), 28, following the circulation on social media of a video showing him publicly advertising cannabis sativa for sale.
“Hon. Justice SM Shuaibu of the Federal High Court 1, Kano, convicted Ashiru Idris and sentenced him to seven (7) years imprisonment without the option of fine, to run from the date of judgment (14th July 2026).
“The Agency views this decisive sentence as a strong deterrent to individuals who publicly promote or engage in illicit drug trade.
Commander Lawal said, “This judgment reinforces our resolve to confront drug offenders who brazenly promote illegal substances on public platforms. We will continue to act swiftly on credible leads and ensure offenders are brought to justice.”
“The Command also expresses appreciation to the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Agency, Brig. Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd), CON, OFR, for his steadfast support and guidance which have bolstered the command’s operations and successes in Kano.
“The Agency calls on all stakeholders — including families, community leaders, social media platforms and the general public — to remain vigilant and support ongoing efforts to curb substance abuse.
“Members of the public with relevant information that can assist in the fight against illicit drugs are urged to come forward.”
