A Nigerian woman has sparked widespread debate on social media after accusing some Nigerian men of applying double standards when it comes to marrying single mothers.
In a viral video shared on X (formerly Twitter), the lady claimed that while many Nigerian men publicly insist they would never marry a single mother in Nigeria, some go on to marry women with children after relocating abroad.
“Nigerian men will say they can’t get married to a single mother, but when they travel abroad and they hear ‘single mother,’ they will jump on her,” she said.
According to her, some of these men proudly celebrate their foreign wives on social media with affectionate posts, despite the women having children from previous relationships.
She questioned why Nigerian single mothers are often treated differently, arguing that many of them simply left unhealthy or unhappy relationships and deserve the same respect as anyone else.
“Most of you are getting married to single mothers in the UK, even single mothers of three, and you’ll post them with sweet captions saying, ‘I love you.’ What did Nigerian single mothers do to you? They didn’t do anything. They just couldn’t tolerate your behaviours,” she said.
The woman also recalled coming across a social media post in which a Nigerian man praised his wife. Curious, she visited the woman’s profile and discovered that she was a single mother of two before their marriage.
Her comments have since sparked mixed reactions online. While some social media users agreed that there is a noticeable double standard in how single mothers are perceived, others argued that whom people choose to marry is a personal decision influenced by individual circumstances rather than nationality.
