NANS to stage protest over remand of ex-FUOYE SUG president

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has announced plans to stage peaceful protests over the remand of the immediate past President of the Students’ Union Government of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Comrade James Iyanuoluwa Adio, by a Magistrate Court in Ekiti State.

The position of the student body was contained in a statement by its National President, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, on Monday.

According to Akinteye, Adio was remanded in connection with a case he personally filed before the court, insisting that the former student leader was the complainant and not an accused person.

He alleged that the matter was allegedly turned against Adio through the actions of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions and the presiding magistrate, describing the development as a breach of due process and the student’s fundamental rights.

“We consider this a clear case of judicial rascality, a gross abuse of due process and a violation of Comrade Adio’s fundamental rights,” the NANS president said.

Akinteye disclosed that he had directed the NANS Joint Campus Committee Chairman for the Ekiti Axis and the association’s National Head of Administration to begin mobilisation for peaceful demonstrations in the state.

“Lawful protests will be held at the Ekiti State High Court, the Magistrate Court and the office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions until Comrade Adio is released and justice is served,” he stated.

He reaffirmed the association’s commitment to protecting the rights of Nigerian students, stressing that NANS would continue to pursue lawful means to ensure justice for its members.
