NDC Demands Suspension of Lagos CP for Attending Tinubu’s City Boy Event

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has called for the immediate suspension of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, following his appearance at an event organised by the City Boy Movement in Lagos.

The opposition party described the police chief’s presence at the gathering as inappropriate and capable of raising concerns about the neutrality of the Nigeria Police Force ahead of the 2027 general elections.

This controversy followed the inauguration of the Lagos chapter of the City Boy Movement on Tuesday in Ikeja.

The group used the occasion to reaffirm support for President Bola Tinubu and pledged to mobilise young Nigerians and grassroots supporters in preparation for the next presidential election.

The event drew the attendance of political figures, traditional rulers, youth groups and members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

However, videos circulated online showing Commissioner Fatai arriving at the venue and exchanging greetings with members and leaders of the movement.

Reacting to the development, the NDC accused the police commissioner of engaging in conduct that could undermine public confidence in the security agency’s role during elections.

In a statement shared on social media, the party said: “We condemn in the strongest terms the appearance of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani, at a partisan event promoting a particular candidate in the upcoming general election.”

The party argued that senior security officials must avoid situations capable of creating the impression of political alignment.

“We understand that the rudderless APC-led administrations have no iota of respect for our institutions, but seeing a Commissioner of Police at a partisan event can only point to one thing: He will be biased in the discharge of his duties during the elections.”

According to the NDC, public officers entrusted with maintaining law and order must remain visibly neutral, especially as political activities begin to intensify across the country.

The party further called on the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force to take disciplinary action against the Lagos police commissioner.

“We therefore demand that the police authorities immediately suspend and sanction the Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani. We further demand that the Police authorities make a firm commitment to playing a neutral role in the upcoming election.”

The NDC also urged the police to guarantee equal protection for all political parties and their supporters irrespective of political affiliation.

“That the Police authorities protect voters and supporters of other candidates who are not members of the ruling party. That the Police ensure the safety of the lives and property of all voters, regardless of religion, ethnicity, or party affiliation.”

As of the time of filing this report, neither the Lagos State Police Command nor the Force Headquarters had issued an official response to the demand by the opposition party.

In a related development, the City Boy Movement recently intensified its nationwide mobilisation efforts as it declared support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.

During a national retreat held in Abuja earlier this month, leaders of the movement said the group had evolved beyond its role as a campaign structure and was now focused on grassroots engagement and youth participation across the country.

Speaking at the gathering, the patron of the movement, Seyi Tinubu, described the organisation as a growing national platform committed to supporting the administration’s policies and programmes.

“This is more than just the opening of a retreat. It is the beginning of a movement. It is the coming together of men and women who have chosen to dedicate their time, energy and talents to the service of Nigeria and the advancement of the Renewed Hope vision.”

He also praised members who travelled from different parts of the country to attend the event.

“You have travelled from every corner of our great nation not because you were compelled to, but because you believe in a cause that is greater than yourselves. That spirit of sacrifice is what defines leadership.”

Seyi Tinubu further urged members not to relent in their mobilisation efforts ahead of future political contests.

“We have only scratched the surface of what we have come together to accomplish. Our greatest victory is still ahead of us. This retreat is not a celebration of yesterday; it is preparation for tomorrow.”

However, the movement has repeatedly maintained that it is a grassroots-driven platform and not a government-created organisation.
