NiDCOM mentors future leaders at youth summit

In commemoration of the National Diaspora Day, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) held a robust Youth Summit at the Banquet Hall, Presidential Villa, Abuja to mentor the country’s future leaders.

The summit was organised to educate the younger generation on the essence of leadership, discipline, and responsible citizenship.

Schools across Abuja were in attendance and participated actively in the programme, including the panel discussion session.

In her opening remarks, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairman/CEO, NIDCOM, stated that the Youth Summit was designed to mentor young leaders and prepare them for the future.

She also provided a platform for two Nigerian returnees from South Africa who were affected by xenophobic attacks to share their experiences. 

Dabiri-Erewa assured them that Nigeria, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, remains committed to supporting them to achieve their dreams.

Delivering a remark, Engr. Alfred Okoigun, the Group Managing Director, ARCO Group Plc, emphasised that every society must be intentional in developing knowledge and discipline. 

Okoigun commended NIDCOM for its Diaspora Doctors Digital Health Research initiative that has advanced telemedicine in Nigeria.

The panel discussion was moderated by Hon. Bobby Digi-Olisa, Youth Development Expert, Canvas Institute, New York, USA. 

It featured excellent resource persons focused on educating and inspiring the youth.

In an interview, Nigerian-American basketball star, Ejimofor Anosike, commended NiDCOM for the initiative. 

Anosike spoke on various mentorship programmes run by his foundation to impact lives. 

He also extended special appreciation to President Tinubu and Dabiri-Erewa, who is fondly referred to as Mama Diaspora.

Also speaking, Dr. Aisha Attahiru, Consultant Public Health Physician and Lecturer, University of Abuja, highlighted the positive impact of the Youth Summit on young Nigerians and commended the organisers for the initiative.

The summit featured a musical interlude by a 15-year-old saxophonist and performance of the Diaspora Anthem by a 16-year-old Nigerian composer.

The anthem has been officially adopted by the Commission.

Participants also visited various exhibition stands where partners showcased their products and services. 

Dymcare made a presentation on the health services it offers, among other exhibitors.

The event ended with a renewed commitment by NiDCOM to continue investing in youth development as a key driver of national progress.
