Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin created an interesting moment during Mahama Ayariga’s ministerial vetting by asking him to recite Ghana’s National Pledge.
The incident happened at Parliament House in Accra on Thursday, August 27, 2026.
Ayariga appeared before Parliament’s Appointments Committee as the nominee for Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.
During his questioning, Afenyo-Markin asked the Bawku Central MP to stand and recite the National Pledge.
Ayariga accepted the request and began reciting the pledge without hesitation.
He delivered it quickly, prompting Afenyo-Markin to interrupt and ask, “Why the speed?”
The comment brought a lighter mood to the committee room.
Ayariga continued and completed the pledge successfully.
The video attracted reactions after it appeared online. Some viewers found the exchange funny, while others argued that every public official should know the National Anthem and National Pledge.
The moment appeared more playful than hostile. Afenyo-Markin and Ayariga have previously spoken about their friendly relationship despite representing opposing political parties.
Afenyo-Markin recently described Ayariga as an easygoing person who does not hold grudges.
Ayariga served as Majority Leader before his nomination for the ministerial position. James Agalga subsequently replaced him as leader of the Majority Caucus.
The Appointments Committee used the vetting to examine Ayariga’s qualifications, experience and plans for the Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Ministry.
