Obasanjo Reveals Fresh Details About Alleged Impeachment Plot

Olusegun Obasanjo, the former president, shockingly disclosed how Atiku Abubakar, his vice president, used N5 million to finance his impeachment scheme during his first term in government.

In reaction to remarks made by Olusegun Osoba, the former governor of Ogun State, regarding the political events leading up to the 2003 general elections, Obasanjo made the accusation.

In a statement, Obasanjo claimed that the late Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ghali Na’Abba, was encouraged to commence impeachment proceedings against him following a meeting with then Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.

According to Obasanjo, the impeachment move began at the presidency, alleging that Atiku, on a Friday when he himself was out of the office, invited Na’Abba and persuaded him as he claimed Atiku had also persuaded himself and a few other insignificant figures that Obasanjo should serve only one term as president.

He alleged that financial support was provided to facilitate the process, claiming that Atiku gave Na’Abba N5 million on that Friday to begin his impeachment work.

Obasanjo said the entire episode was noted, recorded and reported to him by his Chief of Staff, whom he described as a professional intelligence officer.

The former Nigerian leader explained that he was not troubled by the impeachment threat, as he believed there was no constitutional basis for removing him from office.
