Okpebholo-Anani intensifies campaign against obstetric fistula

BENIN CITY – The Coordinator Office of the First Lady, Edo State, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, has reaffirmed her commitment to promoting the health and well-being of women, describing women’s health as a priority under the SHINE Agenda of Governor Monday Okpebholo.
Mrs. Anani made the commitment during a courtesy visit by the management of the National Obstetric Fistula Centre at Government House, Benin City.
She noted that while early marriage is often associated with obstetric fistula, it is not the only cause of the condition, stressing that several other medical factors can also lead to its occurrence.
“The health of every woman is very important to me. Women are wonderfully made and deserve access to quality healthcare and the right information that will help them live healthy and productive lives,” she said.
The First Lady called for intensified public enlightenment on obstetric fistula, urging relevant stakeholders to collaborate in creating awareness and driving sustained advocacy across the state.
The Medical Director, National Obstetric Fistula Centre, Prof. Ileogben Sunday-Adeoye explained that obstetric fistula is a childbirth-related injury that can result from prolonged obstructed labour or, in some cases, complications arising from surgical procedures such as caesarean sections. The condition often causes uncontrollable leakage of urine and faeces, leaving affected women with serious medical and social challenges.
The Medical Director disclosed that the Federal Government, through the Renewed Hope health intervention of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, provides free treatment, transportation and other support services for women living with obstetric fistula.
He appealed to the Office of the First Lady to champion a statewide awareness campaign to ensure that women across every community in Edo State are aware that treatment is available at no cost.
