Ondo varsity lecturers begin indefinite strike over unpaid salaries

Academic activities at the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, have been grounded as lecturers commenced an indefinite strike over the non-payment of two months’ salaries.
The lecturers, under the aegis of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, said the Ondo State Government had yet to pay their May and June 2026 salaries, prompting the industrial action.
The decision was contained in a statement issued on Saturday by the Chairman of ASUU, AAUA chapter, Dr Bolu Oshodi.
The statement read, “The ASUU-AAUA Congress of July 10, 2026, reaffirmed its earlier resolution of Tuesday, April 28, and Thursday, June 18, 2026, respectively, to embark on withdrawal of services to demand for the payment of May and June 2026 salaries.
“The withdrawal of services is total, comprehensive and indefinite until all outstanding salaries are paid. The withdrawal of services commences at 11:59 pm today, Friday, July 10, 2026.”
The union also disclosed that a National Visitation Team from ASUU would visit the institution on Monday, July 13, to address issues relating to the 2025 agreement between the union and the Federal Government.
The latest action comes amid recurring concerns over the welfare of staff in state-owned tertiary institutions, with the union insisting that it will not suspend the strike until the outstanding salaries are paid.
