The Borno State Police Command has arrested two suspects over the alleged fraudulent withdrawal of ₦39.2 million from a bank customer’s account in Maiduguri.
The command also said it recovered ₦10.08 million from the suspects during the investigation.
In a statement on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Nahum Daso, said the case followed a complaint received on April 17, 2026, after unknown persons allegedly gained unauthorised access to a customer’s bank account in the Bolori area of Maiduguri and withdrew ₦39,208,000.
The statement read, “The case followed a complaint received on 17 April 2026, at about 1:00 p.m., unknown individuals unlawfully gained access to the complainant’s bank account and fraudulently withdrew the sum of ₦39,208,000.”
According to the police, operatives of the Command’s Crack Squad immediately launched an investigation using intelligence-led policing and digital forensic techniques.
The investigation, the police said, led to the arrest of Ibrahim Alhaji Gaji, 23, and Umar Mohammed, also known as Baba Alhaji, 39, on June 27, 2026.
The command added, “During the operation, the sum of ₦10,080,000 was recovered from the suspects.”
It said efforts were ongoing to recover the outstanding balance and arrest other persons linked to the alleged crime.
“Investigation is ongoing, with sustained efforts aimed at recovering the outstanding balance and apprehending other individuals connected to the crime. The suspects will be charged to court upon the conclusion of the investigation,” the statement added.
The Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajid, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to combating cybercrime and financial fraud.
He also advised members of the public to protect their banking credentials and promptly report suspicious financial transactions or cyber-related incidents to the nearest police station.
