Presidency replies as Makinde call for UN probe on school abduction

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has demanded a full and transparent account from the Federal Government over the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area, saying the issue is about justice and accountability.
The governor said the matter should not be treated as a political dispute but as a serious security incident that requires clear answers for the victims, their families and Nigerians.
Makinde had called for a United Nations-led investigation into the abduction, arguing that an independent review would help uncover what happened, identify any failures and ensure confidence in the outcome of the investigation.
The victims were later rescued after spending weeks in captivity, bringing relief to their families and communities. However, questions have remained over the circumstances surrounding the attack and the response process.
Responding to the governor’s call, the Presidency said Nigeria’s security agencies have the capacity to investigate the incident and manage security challenges without the need for external intervention.
Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga questioned the need for a UN probe, saying Nigerian authorities should be allowed to carry out their duties and provide answers on the matter.
The federal government maintained that security agencies acted during the rescue operation and continue working to prevent similar attacks on schools and communities.
The disagreement between Governor Makinde and the Presidency has continued to generate public debate, with many Nigerians calling for improved security and greater transparency in handling cases of abduction.
