On Friday, July 24, 2026, the Sokoto State Government has given government personnel a day off work so that individuals who have not yet registered to vote can participate in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration campaign run by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
The Director-General of Media and Publicity at Government House in Sokoto, Abubakar Bawa, revealed this in a statement on Thursday.
According to Governor Ahmed Aliyu, the move is designed to give civil servants sufficient time to secure their Permanent Voter Cards before the 2027 general elections.
He explained that the work-free day was declared specifically so that eligible civil servants who had not yet registered could do so and obtain their PVCs.
The governor called on all qualified civil servants still without PVCs to seize the opportunity, noting that the card remains the only valid means by which citizens can exercise their constitutional voting right.
He encouraged them to use the free day to get registered and secure their cards ahead of the coming elections.
Aliyu said his administration remains dedicated to encouraging civic engagement by making sure workers are not left out of their democratic duties, adding that the government is committed to giving civil servants every chance to take part in national exercises and exercise their civic rights.
He further appealed to other qualifying residents of the state, especially newly-eligible voters and those who had not yet signed up, to make use of the extended registration window.
He reminded residents that the extended CVR exercise will close on Sunday, July 26, 2026, and urged all qualified persons to complete their registration before then.
