Teen girl dies celebrating France’s World Cup victory

A 17-year-old girl has died after she was crushed by a lorry while celebrating France’s qualification for the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Aulnoye-Aymeries, northern France.

According to The Sun, the teenager was among thousands of supporters celebrating France’s 2-0 quarter-final victory over Morocco when the incident occurred shortly after midnight.

Police said she had climbed onto the side of a lorry with other fans before falling onto the road.

“She had climbed onto the side of a lorry, along with others, but fell onto the road.

“The teenager was then crushed by the same vehicle. Attempts were made to revive her, but she was declared dead at the scene soon after midnight,” a police spokesperson said.

The report said the truck driver was arrested and would undergo alcohol and drug tests as part of the investigation.

Three witnesses were also taken to hospital with minor injuries and symptoms of shock.

French authorities have launched an investigation into the fatal accident.

The incident occurred as hundreds of thousands of supporters celebrated France’s victory across the country.

According to the report, climbing onto moving vehicles has become a recurring feature of football celebrations in France despite repeated warnings from authorities about the dangers.

Police had prepared for possible unrest similar to the disturbances that followed Paris Saint-Germain’s UEFA Champions League triumph in May, but said celebrations were largely peaceful.

Only 10 arrests were recorded in Paris, while fewer incidents were reported in other parts of the country.

France secured their place in the World Cup semi-finals after second-half goals from Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele sealed a 2-0 victory over Morocco.
