Tinubu honours Nigeria’s first military head of state, Aguiyi-Ironsi

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid tribute to Nigeria’s first Military Head of State, the late General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi, hailing him as a symbol of patriotism, courage, discipline, national unity and selfless service.

Tinubu made the remarks in a message delivered by the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd.), at the 60th Memorial Celebration of Aguiyi-Ironsi held in Umuahia, Abia State, on Wednesday.

The President said Aguiyi-Ironsi distinguished himself as an exceptional military officer whose career was marked by loyalty, professionalism and commitment to national duty.

“General Aguiyi-Ironsi rose through the ranks to become the first Nigerian General Officer Commanding the Nigerian Army and subsequently Nigeria’s first Military Head of State during one of the most critical periods in our national history,” Tinubu said.

He noted that although Aguiyi-Ironsi’s tenure was brief, he demonstrated commitment to preserving national unity, restoring stability and protecting the integrity of the Nigerian state.

“He understood that leadership demands sacrifice, placing the interest of the nation above personal considerations,” he said.

Tinubu reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s unity and strengthening democratic institutions, stressing that the values demonstrated by national heroes remained important for nation-building.

“The Federal Government remains resolute in its commitment to preserving the unity of Nigeria and strengthening the institutions that safeguard our democracy,” he said.

“Our diversity remains one of our greatest strengths, and it is through mutual respect, tolerance, justice and shared purpose that we will continue to build a peaceful and prosperous nation.”

The President also commended the organisers of the memorial for sustaining the tradition of honouring past national leaders, saying remembrance of national heroes helps to reinforce the values that bind the country together.

The event ended with prayers for the Armed Forces of Nigeria, the Aguiyi-Ironsi family and the continued peace and prosperity of the nation.

Speaking at the ceremony, former President Olusegun Obasanjo described Aguiyi-Ironsi as a patriot and distinguished military officer who assumed leadership during a challenging period in Nigeria’s history.

“General Aguiyi-Ironsi was a fine officer and a patriot who found himself at the helm during a turbulent storm in our national journey,” Obasanjo said.

He urged Nigerians to preserve the values of unity, peace and institutional integrity associated with the late military leader.

The Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, expressed appreciation to the Federal Government, military authorities and elder statesmen for honouring one of the state’s most prominent sons.

Otti said Abia remained proud of Aguiyi-Ironsi’s courage and sacrifice for national unity, adding that his legacy continued to inspire efforts towards good governance, justice and national cohesion.

Other dignitaries at the event included former First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan, former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika, serving and retired military officers, lawmakers and traditional rulers.
