Trump threatens to "destroy one bridge or power plant" every time Iran hits ships in Strait of Hormuz

US President Donald Trump has announced that the U.S. will retaliate directly against Iranian domestic infrastructure if Tehran attacks commercial or military vessels in the Middle East.
Writing on Truth Social, he declared that any strike involving missiles, rockets, or drones targeting shipping in the narrow waterway would prompt the military to bomb and destroy “ONE BRIDGE OR POWER PLANT,” explicitly noting that potential targets include those located in or near the capital city of Tehran.

This ultimatum highlights the high stakes surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime passage connecting the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman. Because roughly 20% of the world’s petroleum supply passes through this narrow chokepoint, any threat to commercial shipping creates immediate volatility in global energy markets and triggers swift military postures from international powers.
Commercial tankers and allied vessels in the area have routinely faced threats, drone strikes, and vessel seizures during ongoing regional friction.
By explicitly singling out energy facilities and transit routes, the threat targets core civilian infrastructure.
Under international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions, launching deliberate attacks against purely non-military facilities, such as municipal bridges or power grids serving civilian populations, is prohibited unless those structures serve a distinct and direct military purpose.
The statement builds upon previous warnings where threat of infrastructure destruction was leveraged to push Iranian leadership into diplomatic negotiations over its nuclear program and regional security operations.
