Yvonne Jegede Sparks Debate After Saying Nigerians Are Not Worth Fighting For

Nollywood actress Yvonne Jegede has said Nigerians are not worth fighting for, expressing frustration over what she described as constant backlash whenever she speaks out against the country’s problems.

The actress took to social media to say she gets attacked simply for speaking against the ills she observes in the country, appearing to respond indirectly to First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, who had urged popular stars such as Davido and Burna Boy to support initiatives aimed at lifting Nigerians out of poverty.

Yvonne questioned why ordinary citizens who work hard to earn a living and pay their taxes should also be expected to fill in for the responsibilities of government, arguing that after paying taxes meant to fund public welfare, citizens are still called upon to help provide a better life for the masses, while suggesting that tax proceeds often end up benefiting certain privileged individuals instead.

She said the situation in the country had pushed her mental health to its limits.

She added that the more she speaks up about what she describes as troubling realities in the country, the more backlash she receives, saying she now understands why many people choose to remain silent during times of crisis.

She maintained that she was not raised to look away while injustice takes place, but lamented that Nigerians, in her view, are not worth fighting for because of what she described as widespread bigotry.
