Zimbabwe’s Beneficiation Policy Drives Mineral Export Surge, Bolstering EV Supply Chain Position

Zimbabwe’s strategic pivot towards mineral beneficiation is yielding significant economic dividends, with export earnings experiencing a dramatic surge driven by value-added products rather than increased extraction volumes. This policy, initially met with apprehension regarding its impact on mining operations, is now demonstrably strengthening the nation’s standing within global mineral value chains, particularly those critical to the burgeoning electric vehicle (EV) sector.

Data released by the Minerals Marketing Corporation of Zimbabwe (MMCZ) reveals that mineral export earnings reached USD 2.532 billion in the first half of 2026. This represents an impressive 84.7 percent increase compared to the USD 1.376 billion recorded in the corresponding period of 2025. While enhanced international demand and favourable commodity prices played a role, analysts underscore the more profound development: Zimbabwe’s deliberate transition towards exporting processed mineral products. For years, the economic rationale for African nations to refine strategic minerals domestically, rather than exporting them raw, has been a persistent argument. These latest figures suggest Zimbabwe is actively reversing this trend, evidenced by growing investment in local processing capabilities.

The composition of these exports clearly aligns with the global clean energy transition. Platinum Group Metal (PGM) matte emerged as the leading contributor, accounting for 33.93 percent of total mineral earnings. This was closely followed by spodumene concentrates at 26.57 percent and PGM concentrates at 13.73 percent. Collectively, these three processed products constituted over 74 percent of total mineral export revenue, a marked departure from previous years where gold and raw chrome were the dominant export commodities.

A pivotal achievement has been the commencement of commercial exports of locally processed lithium sulphate earlier this year. By transforming spodumene into battery-grade chemical precursors within Zimbabwe, producers are now capturing substantially greater value from each tonne of lithium extracted. MMCZ General Manager Dr. Nomusa Jane Moyo highlighted this development, stating that the country’s mining success is increasingly being measured by the sophistication of domestic processing, not solely by extraction volumes. This strategic shift is solidifying Zimbabwe’s participation in the global battery materials supply chain, with higher-value products like ferrochrome, refined steel, polished granite, and lithium sulphate steadily supplanting raw mineral exports.

The substantial increase in export earnings has concurrently amplified calls for robust governance and enhanced oversight. Industry stakeholders are cautioning that the export of higher-value processed minerals necessitates more rigorous monitoring to effectively combat illicit financial flows, transfer pricing irregularities, and mineral smuggling. In response, the MMCZ has announced expanded investments in digital mineral tracking systems, strengthened contract monitoring mechanisms, and the development of regional laboratory networks. These initiatives are designed to improve traceability and safeguard national mineral revenues, ensuring that the benefits of this beneficiation boom are fully realised.
