27 Arrested for Allegedly Vandalising Newly Built Lagos Bridge

The Lagos State Government has apprehended 27 suspected hoodlums allegedly responsible for vandalising a newly constructed bridge connecting Festac Town to Alakija during a midnight enforcement operation.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources disclosed this development in a statement, describing the arrests as following discovery of what he characterised as a disturbing act of vandalism beneath the bridge structure.

According to the commissioner, investigations revealed that suspects allegedly removed iron rods, steel reinforcements, cables, and other components critical to the bridge’s structural integrity.

He explained that the suspects deliberately targeted essential structural materials supporting the infrastructure’s overall stability and safety.

The commissioner warned that destruction of these bridge components posed significant safety risks, characterising the criminal act as a serious threat to public safety that undermines government investment in critical infrastructure.

He explained that a joint midnight enforcement operation involving the Rapid Response Squad and the Kick Against Indiscipline task force led to the suspects’ apprehension, confirming that all 27 individuals would face prosecution in accordance with applicable Lagos State laws.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to protecting public assets, the commissioner stated that enforcement operations targeting vandals and other offenders would continue, emphasising the state’s determination to take decisive action against individuals or groups engaged in vandalism, environmental infractions, and other criminal activities threatening resident safety and wellbeing.
