“You can’t be calling me Mo anyhow. I wouldn’t take it.” — Media mogul, Mo Abudu, kicks against younger people addressing elders by their first names

Media mogul and EbonyLife CEO, Mo Abudu, has stated that she will not tolerate being casually addressed by her first name by younger individuals, emphasizing the importance of traditional boundaries and respect. 

Speaking in a recent interview with media personality Toke Makinwa on the digital show Toke Moments, the 61-year-old entertainment executive described herself as “very traditional,” noting that her strict traditional upbringing heavily influenced her perspective on age hierarchy and respect. 

“I am very traditional. I was brought up in Ondo by my grandmother. You can’t be calling me by my first name anyhow. I won’t take it! The thing that annoys me the most is that there are people younger than me, you call them mummy and then call me Aunty” she said

Abudu expressed concern over a growing trend where younger people casually greet her with a simple “Hi” instead of using culturally appropriate, respectful titles. 

‘’I always ask where they are from. If they are not Yoruba,  then I can be little more forgiving but if you are Yoruba? I correct them politely but it is just important we never forget our culture.”

Her comment comes weeks after UBA chairman, Tony Elumelu, openly cautioned a young lady who addressed him as ‘’Tony”
