Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has raised concerns regarding a suspected breach of his private banking information following reports that an unidentified individual transferred funds into one of his personal accounts.
In a statement issued through his senior communications aide, the former Vice President indicated that the transaction occurred within a private account maintained at a leading commercial bank in Nigeria.
According to the statement, the payment carried a narration referencing electioneering campaign contributions, despite neither Atiku nor his campaign team having solicited, authorised, or possessed any knowledge regarding the sender’s identity.
The former presidential candidate characterised the development as troubling, emphasising that the account in question remains strictly private with details not publicly accessible.
He questioned how an unknown party gained access to confidential banking information, cautioning that the incident raises broader concerns regarding the security of Nigerians’ financial data generally.
The statement suggested that if private banking information belonging to a former Vice President and prominent presidential candidate could be accessed and deployed for undisclosed purposes, no Nigerian’s financial privacy could be considered secure.
Atiku further alleged that the apparent leak may have originated from individuals possessing privileged access to sensitive information, warning that such exposure could place account holders at risk from various criminal elements including k!dnappers, extremists, and fr@udsters.
He characterised the incident as part of a broader pattern of suspicious activities occurring ahead of the 2027 general elections and called on security agencies to take note of the development.
He additionally dismissed what he termed attempts at character assassination, maintaining that his focus remains on providing credible leadership and practical solutions to Nigeria’s challenges.
