Pastor Adeboye Prays for Nigeria’s Return to Sporting Glory

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has offered prayers for the restoration of Nigeria’s past glory in international sports, expressing confidence that the nation would reclaim its position among leading sporting nations globally.

The cleric spoke during a special thanksgiving service dedicated to sports stakeholders, real estate developers, and their families at the church’s National Headquarters in Lagos.

Praying for athletes, sports administrators, and other stakeholders, Adeboye asked God to restore Nigeria’s historic sporting achievements, recalling the nation’s past glories including its World Cup victory, expressing hope that such accomplishments would return. He prayed for continued success among individuals connected to sports in various capacities.

Preaching from scripture, the cleric compared the Christian journey to a boxing contest, describing life as a continuous struggle in which those who remain standing ultimately emerge victorious, characterising a champion as one who remains upright after the contest with hand raised in triumph.

Adeboye identified three essential qualities for anyone aspiring toward championship status: strength, wisdom, and proper guidance.

Drawing from biblical text, he emphasised that human strength alone proves insufficient for overcoming life’s challenges, noting that even the strongest individuals experience weariness, though divine promise offers renewal of strength for those who maintain faith.

Regarding wisdom, the cleric referenced legendary boxer Muhammad Ali as a personal inspiration, explaining that the boxer often gained competitive advantage by provoking opponents into anger, understanding that emotional distraction leads to costly errors.

Adeboye emphasised the necessity of divine guidance, cautioning that even trusted associates could become adversaries during critical moments.

The cleric further emphasised the importance of mentorship, distinguishing between friendship and effective coaching by explaining that genuine mentors continually challenge individuals toward improvement rather than accepting complacency, identifying religious faith as providing ultimate guidance toward victory.

Using additional boxing imagery, he counselled worshippers against losing hope following setbacks, encouraging resilience and eventual recovery of strength, while emphasising that champions are defined not by absence of mistakes but by their capacity to persevere despite them.

Speaking with journalists following the service, a senior pastor within the church organisation called on Nigerian parents to intentionally raise children with discipline, integrity, and strong moral values, attributing increasing societal moral decline largely to inadequate upbringing within homes.

He emphasised that families represent society’s foundational unit, and when parents fail to instil proper values in children, broader society ultimately bears the consequences, urging families to return to sound moral upbringing as a pathway toward rebuilding national dignity.
