The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, or EFCC, has purportedly frozen an Osun State Government account with First Bank, only ten days before the state’s governorship election.
According to records obtained by Vanguard, the anti-graft agency placed the account, which was claimed to be used to pay workers’ salaries, under a “Post No Debit” restriction.
The news came shortly after Governor Ademola Adeleke claimed that the EFCC was preparing to freeze state government accounts and those of top officials ahead of the August 15 election.
In response to the move, the state administration, through Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment Kolapo Alimi, condemned the alleged action as an attempt to disrupt government activities in the run-up to the election.
Governor Adeleke contended that there was no legal basis for freezing the state’s accounts, claiming that the EFCC lacked the statutory authority to take such action against a state government.
A source close to the administration, speaking on the condition of anonymity, revealed that the account had already been limited.
“I affirm that the EFCC has frozen the state government account. It’s no longer an allegation.
