Police officers at a regional headquarters in Kano have detained five suspects accused of impersonation and the manufacture, sale and distribution of counterfeit herbal medicine products under the identity of a legitimate traditional medicine practitioner.
The arrests followed a complaint lodged on August 10, 2026, by the proprietor of a registered herbal and Islamic clinic in Bauchi.
The complainant alleged that the suspects and others still at large have been capitalising on his name, business identity and professional materials to market and distribute fraudulent products.
He stated that some suspects obtained payments from members of the public in his name but failed to deliver the medicines purchased, while others distributed counterfeit herbal preparations capable of harming health.
Five individuals were identified as being apprehended in connection with the matter.
The suspects have provided statements acknowledging participation in the alleged offences. Investigation continues to identify and apprehend additional individuals connected to the scheme.
Police cautioned the public against fr@udsters who exploit the identities and standing of established businesses to deceive consumers.
Members of the public were advised to authenticate the legitimacy of products, vendors and payment mechanisms before engaging in transactions, particularly through online platforms.
Police further warned individuals participating in similar activities to cease such conduct, cautioning that those found culpable would face applicable legal penalties.
