Gusau resigns as NFF president

President of the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, Ibrahim Gusau, has resigned from office amid mounting crises in Nigerian football.

Mr Gusau announced his resignation on Thursday during a press conference in Abuja.

According to the Super Eagles news account on X, @SSE_NGA, Mr Gusau was joined by members of the NFF Executive Committee in resigning from their respective positions.

His resignation comes against the backdrop of a turbulent period for Nigerian football, marked by the Super Falcons’ failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The Falcons suffered a 2-1 defeat to South Africa in the play-off, missing out on the tournament for the first time in the history of the women’s national team.

The setback followed the Falcons’ elimination from the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations at the quarter-final stage by Cameroon.

The Super Eagles also failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, further deepening concerns over the state of Nigerian football under the current football administration.

The NFF has also faced scrutiny over its management of a N17 billion Federal Government intervention fund released in 2024.

A fact-finding committee had also alleged that some NFF board members and officials influenced invitations to national teams for financial gain.

Mr Gusau’s resignation comes barely weeks before the NFF elective congress scheduled to hold on September 27 in Lafia, Nasarawa State.

The development is expected to trigger fresh uncertainty over the leadership and administration of Nigerian football ahead of the elective congress.
