A Texas high school teacher has broken down in tears while describing his concerns about his students’ struggles with basic reading and writing skills.
Darius Williams, a teacher at Wheatley High School in Houston, shared a video on Instagram after completing a three-hour class with senior students who are preparing to leave high school and attend college next year.
In the emotional video, Williams began crying as he described what he said was his students’ inability to complete a basic reading and writing exercise, even after receiving assistance. According to Williams, he gave the students two paragraphs to read and then asked them to write a single sentence based on the material.
He said the students were unable to complete the exercise, leaving him deeply concerned about their readiness for life after high school. Williams became visibly emotional as he discussed the situation, expressing particular concern that students approaching graduation could leave school without what he considers fundamental literacy skills.
The teacher said the experience was especially painful because he believes many of his students are not receiving the level of education they need before moving on to college or adulthood. The video has drawn attention online, with Williams’ emotional reaction highlighting broader concerns about literacy, educational outcomes and the challenges facing teachers and students in some American schools.
