Nollywood actress Rita Edochie has demonstrated indifference toward the defamation suit filed against her by Judy Austin, the wife of her husband’s nephew.
While addressing the legal action, Rita offered commentary directed at women managing unfaithful spouses, asserting that such women forfeit certain personal autonomies.
She expressed dismissiveness at the prospect of Judy preventing her from engaging in public discourse.
Rita articulated that women accommodating unfaithful husbands essentially relinquish personal agency.
She argued that without proactive intervention, infidelity may escalate to extreme domestic violations, eventually placing women in helpless circumstances offering no remedies.
She emphasised that tolerating chronic infidelity causes psychological deterioration and undermines mental wellbeing.
Rita acknowledged that multiple factors complicate women’s departure from infidelity situations, including childcare responsibilities, familial pressure, economic dependency, emotional attachment and societal expectations.
She recognised that individuals outside marriages frequently underestimate the complexity surrounding separation decisions.
However, Rita rejected the normalisation of infidelity as a forgivable transgression women must perpetually tolerate to demonstrate virtuous wifehood.
She argued that husbands assured of spousal forgiveness become increasingly comfortable with disrespect and systematic betrayal, progressively escalating infidelity into established behaviour whilst expecting wives to maintain composure, domestic responsibilities and exemplary deportment.
Rita characterised this pattern as unacceptable, emphasising that forgiveness does not constitute permission, patience does not indicate acquiescence, submission does not equal subjugation, and matrimony does not authorise systematic humiliation.
She acknowledged women’s autonomous choice to remain within relationships whilst rejecting permanent obligations to accept continued disrespect.
Rita cautioned men against assuming wives will indefinitely endure infidelity due to children, extended family or social consequences, asserting that accumulated psychological depletion may prompt women to depart relationships despite apparent external constraints.
The commentary emerged hours following Judy’s filing of a defamation writ demanding N1 billion in damages, full retraction and apology, N50 million procedural costs and ten per cent post-judgment interest.
The public conflict reflects ongoing tensions following Judy’s marriage to Rita’s nephew-in-law.
Rita has previously critiqued Judy through indirect commentary, noting that other individuals maintain international presence whilst Judy maintains close proximity to her relative.
She has also questioned the appropriateness of individuals appropriating others’ spouses and subsequently defended those critical of Judy’s actions.
