Jay-Jay Okocha, the former Super Eagles captain, has condemned the administrative failures and structural deficiencies in Nigeria’s national football programme, calling the situation needlessly frustrating.

Speaking on a podcast, Okocha outlined the operational difficulties faced by players, from the absence of dedicated training facilities to unpaid incentives and accumulated debts to accommodation providers.

He expressed particular dismay at the prevalence of player disputes over bonus payments during major competitions and the overall amateurish approach to managing the national side.

Okocha also highlighted the potential repercussions of Nigeria’s non-qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, warning that without the global platform the tournament provides, the country’s footballers risk diminished international prominence despite their individual achievements abroad.

According to the football icon, reversing Nigeria’s football troubles requires no revolutionary thinking only the establishment of proper infrastructure and the appointment of qualified administrators capable of delivering measurable improvements.

He further underscored the potential value of incorporating experienced former players into administrative and decision-making roles, arguing that their expertise should not be undervalued simply due to their retired status.
