Kano Assembly suspends three LG chairmen

The Kano State House of Assembly has suspended the chairmen of Rogo, Bagwai and Bebeji local government areas over allegations of financial misappropriation, abuse of office and other administrative irregularities.

The suspended chairmen are Abubakar Mustapha (Rogo), Bello Dadanya (Bagwai) and Alhassan Salisu (Bebeji). According to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Kamaluddeen Shawai, the suspension followed the adoption of a report by the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

Presenting the committee’s report, Majority Leader Lawan Hussaini said the Assembly received several petitions from residents of the affected local government areas accusing the chairmen of financial misappropriation, abuse of office, breach of public trust and administrative misconduct.

Hussaini said the committee conducted investigations before making its recommendations. “The committee conducted thorough interactive sessions with officials from the three local governments, reviewed council records, and examined documents,” he said. He added that the Assembly acted in line with Sections 128 and 129 of the 1999 Constitution, which empower state legislatures to investigate public institutions and carry out oversight functions.

Following the adoption of the report, the House directed that its resolution be forwarded to the Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs for immediate implementation. The Assembly also ordered the vice chairmen of Rogo, Bagwai and Bebeji local government areas to take over the administration of their respective councils pending the conclusion of the committee’s final investigation.
