Kano Gov Bans IV Drips and Blood Transfusions at Medicine Shops

Kano State’s government has announced a ban on administering intravenous fluids and blood transfusions at medicine shops across the state.

An official from the state’s private health institutions regulatory agency made the announcement during a workshop for owners and medical directors of private health facilities.

She said medicine shops are classified as retail outlets and are not legally allowed to perform invasive medical procedures, give IV fluids or carry out blood transfusions.

The ban is intended to protect residents from unsafe and illegal medical practices and to improve oversight of private health facilities in the state.

Anyone operating a medicine shop or unauthorised facility that is caught administering IV fluids or blood transfusions will face immediate closure and other legal penalties.

The official stressed that blood transfusions and IV fluid therapy can only be given in accredited health facilities where qualified medical professionals supervise the procedures.

The measure is part of the state government’s efforts to protect people’s health and safety.

The regulatory agency urged the public to stay alert and report medicine shops or other unauthorised facilities that offer prohibited services.

Complaints can be submitted to the agency office with supporting evidence like photos or receipts.

The agency said it will continue to strengthen regulation of private health institutions and take action against unsafe, illegal and unhygienic medical practices.

Private health facility operators were urged to follow the directive and meet approved standards to improve healthcare in the state.
