A graduate of Lagos State University, LASU, who has yet to be recognized, is struggling for his life after being hit by a stray gunshot while suspected armed robbers allegedly targeted a Point of Sale, PoS, operator in Lagos State’s Igando region.
It was gathered that the incident happened on Sunday along Kayode Onafuye Street in the Alhaji Ede area of the community.
Eyewitnesses said four armed men, who arrived on two motorcycles, stormed a bungalow in search of the PoS operator, whom they allegedly trailed to the neighbourhood.
However, the assailants were unable to gain entry into the building after the occupants locked the entrance, blocking their access.
A resident identified only as Bode said the failed break-in enraged the suspects, who then allegedly opened fire indiscriminately.
According to him, the r0bbers, numbering about four, arrived on two motorcycles, having traced the PoS operator to her home.
He said they first went to her shop nearby, and upon finding she wasn’t there, proceeded to the house, calling out to her while trying to force their way in.
It was at that point, he said, that the occupants shut the door, and the frustrated suspects began shooting sporadically.
Another resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity for security reasons, said the victim was simply walking along the street when he was struck by one of the bullets fired by the fleeing gunmen. According to the resident, many in the area were unaware anything was happening until the sound of gunfire broke out.
He said the young man had unknowingly walked into the scene just as the r0bbers began shooting after failing to locate their target, and that once the gunmen fled, residents rushed to his aid and took him to a nearby General Hospital.
One of those who helped rescue him said the victim had just graduated from LASU and was preparing for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme.
A police source said officers were promptly dispatched to the scene following the report, adding that spent bullet shells were recovered in front of the house.
When contacted on Tuesday, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, CSP Abimbola Adebisi, said she had not yet been briefed on the incident but promised to verify the report, saying she would check and revert.
As of the time of filing this report, the police spokesperson had yet to provide an update.
