A newborn baby was allegedly @bducted from a healthcare facility in Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State in the early hours of Tuesday, shortly after delivery.
The infant, who had initially failed to cry at birth but subsequently responded and stabilised, was taken to a ward alongside his mother for post-delivery observation.
A woman claiming to be a nurse approached the mother and requested permission to conduct another examination on the newborn.
The suspect removed the baby from his mother and proceeded towards the labour room.
The baby’s grandmother, becoming suspicious, followed and stationed herself at the labour room entrance.
The woman allegedly instructed her to leave, assuring her there was no cause for alarm.
The grandmother complied, and the woman subsequently disappeared with the infant.
Staff at the facility later denied collecting the newborn and confirmed that the woman who posed as a nurse was not an employee.
The incident triggered panic at the hospital, with relatives and concerned individuals gathering to support the mother.
Security personnel were deployed to maintain order.
The Police Public Relations Officer confirmed the incident on Wednesday night, stating that the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Makurdi for further investigation due to the public attention surrounding the disappearance.
Investigators indicated that additional details would be released as facts about the circumstances emerged.
