Osun 2026: Accord petitions EU, ECOWAS over rising violence

The Accord Party has appealed to the European Union (EU) and Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to urgently intervene and deescalate the rising political tension ahead of Saturday’s governorship election in Osun.

The National Chairman of Accord, Maxwell Mgbudem made the position of the party known on Wednesday in Abuja.

He disclosed that the party had written a letter dated August 12 to both the EU delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS on the rising political tension in Osun ahead of Saturday’s election.

Mgbudem described the election as a crucial test for the country’s democratic trajectory and a critical precursor to the 2027 general election.

He observed with concern, the incidences of intimidation and violence targeting its members, saying such might threaten the credibility of the process.

According to data and incident trackers cited in the letter, the political environment had grown intensely volatile, resulting in at least 29 reported fatalities and numerous gunshot injuries.

“The situation has been further inflamed by the detention of more than 60 Accord members and supporters across Abuja and Nasarawa State, alongside threats of violence from prominent political figures.

”More worrisome is the viral video where a sitting Senator ordered that Accord members should be killed wherever they are cited,” Mgbudem said.

He said that the petition raised serious questions regarding the impartial deployment of federal law enforcement and regulatory agencies.

Mgbudem highlighted the controversial freezing of Osun government bank accounts by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which was later reversed following public outcry and presidential intervention.

While emphasising that the party respects the statutory mandates of the anti-corruption and law enforcement bodies, Mgbudem cautioned against what he tagged, `the weaponisation of state power.’

“Our concern, therefore, is not to obstruct any lawful investigation or enforcement action, but to ensure that legitimate state powers are not deployed in a manner to intimidate political opponents, restrict lawful political participation or create an uneven electoral playing field,” he said.

He urged the EU to use its diplomatic influence to advocate for strict political neutrality from security agencies, independent oversight from INEC and a secure environment that guarantees a free, fair and transparent ballot for all citizens.

“We are not asking the EU to take sides in the political contest or to endorse any political party or candidate.

“Our appeal is for the protection of democratic principles, the rule of law, political pluralism and the fundamental right of the people of Osun to freely choose their leaders,” he said.

He stressed that the election must remain a pure reflection of the will of the people of Osun.
