The Kogi State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Jacob Irewa in connection with an alleged attempted culpable homicide involving his wife, Berida Irawo, at Oworo Estate, Felele, Lokoja in Nigeria.
According to a police statement, the incident occurred on Friday, August 14, 2026, at about 8:30pm, when the B Division Surveillance Team, Felele, received a report and immediately mobilised to the scene, where the suspect was arrested.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the incident followed a domestic disagreement after the victim burnt some of the suspect’s clothes, which she believed he was no longer using without his permission.
The suspect subsequently threatened her, fetched petrol from his motorcycle, and proceeded to set her ablaze.
The victim survived the attack and is currently receiving treatment at Honey Gold Hospital, Felele. Police said the suspect admitted during interrogation that he set his wife on fire.
Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Command, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, condemned the alleged act and reaffirmed the command’s zero tolerance for domestic and other forms of violence, urging the public to resolve disagreements through lawful and peaceful means.
The suspect is expected to be charged to court for prosecution once investigations are concluded.
