The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is reportedly unlikely to extend Carlos Queiroz’s contract as Black Stars head coach, despite calls for the Portuguese tactician to remain in charge following Ghana’s run to the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Carlos Queiroz was appointed on a short-term, four-month contract in April, just weeks before the tournament, with the deal set to expire in August.
While reports in July suggested the GFA and Sports Ministry had agreed to hand him a new two-year contract following Ghana’s best World Cup showing since 2010, talks have since stalled, reportedly due to disagreements over his demands, complicating the association’s plans as it heads into the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.
GFA Executive Council member Nana Oduro Sarfo has confirmed the association remains in talks with other coaches for the Black Stars job, even as he has separately defended Queiroz’s impact on the team, crediting the 73-year-old with instilling the tactical discipline that frustrated opponents like England and Panama during the tournament.
The uncertainty has been compounded by the exit of assistant coach Roger De Sa, who left to become technical director at Cape Town Spurs, meaning Queiroz would need to rebuild part of his technical team even if retained.
With Ghana set to open its 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign in September, drawn in Group C alongside Ivory Coast, Somalia, and The Gambia, the GFA faces mounting pressure to resolve the coaching situation quickly.
