Tinubu forwards state police bill to senate

President Bola Tinubu has forwarded the Constitution Alteration Bill seeking to establish state police to the senate.

The proposed Constitution Alteration Bill aims to amend relevant sections of the 1999 Constitution to provide a legal framework for the creation and operation of state police in Nigeria.

The move follows repeated calls by the President for constitutional reforms that would allow state governments to play a more active role in securing lives and property within their jurisdictions.

Tinubu had earlier urged the national assembly to support constitutional amendments that would pave the way for state police, arguing that the reform is crucial in addressing terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security challenges facing the country.

The proposal comes amid growing support for decentralised policing, with lawmakers in both chambers of the National Assembly already considering constitutional amendments designed to expand the role of states in maintaining security.
