Troops overpower terrorists, recover AK-47 in Sokoto community

Troops of Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have foiled an attempted advance by armed terrorists towards Ghandi town in Rabah Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

The operation was conducted on Sunday, August 30, following credible intelligence on the movement of an armed group towards the community.

A statement signed and released by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division, Lt. Col. Olaniyi Osoba, said the troops “swiftly deployed to strategic positions near Ghandi Bridge to intercept the threat.”

The statement said that upon making contact, the troops “engaged the terrorists with superior firepower, overpowering the group and forcing them to retreat in disarray.”

It added that “several insurgents sustained gunshot wounds and attempted to escape by jumping into the adjacent river.”

According to the Army, a subsequent clearance and search operation conducted at daybreak led to the recovery of “one AK-47 rifle, one loaded magazine, additional rounds of ammunition and various personal effects” abandoned by the fleeing terrorists.

The statement said the recovered items were secured by the troops, while search and mop-up operations continued in the area.

It further said the ongoing operation was aimed at “tracking down the fleeing suspects” and preventing further threats to residents of Ghandi and neighbouring communities.

The latest operation highlights the continued efforts by troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA to contain terrorist activities and restore security across communities in Sokoto State.
