Mohammed Mahmud Lele, Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to Algeria, passed away at the age of fifty, according to the Federal Government.
Kimiebi Ebienfa, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ spokesperson, revealed this in a statement released in Abuja on Wednesday.
The government reports that Lele passed away in Ankara, Turkey, early on April 19, 2026, following a protracted illness.
The late diplomat was characterized by the ministry as a devoted officer who distinguished himself while serving the nation.
“The late Ambassador Lele served as the Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Middle East and Gulf Division until his death following a protracted illness.
“After the Nigerian Senate confirmed his nomination, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appointed career diplomat Ambassador Lele as Ambassador-designate to the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria,” the statement stated.
Lele, who was born in Gamawa, Bauchi State, in 1976, attended Bayero University in Kano to study economics before serving in Nigerian missions in Berlin, Lomé, and Riyadh.
The statement said, “Ambassador Lele was renowned for his depth of knowledge, strategic insight, and dedication to the advancement of Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives.”
The late diplomat was “a hardworking, humble and fine officer, who will be sorely missed by the ministry,” according to Dunoma Umar Ahmed, the ministry’s permanent secretary, who accepted his remains at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
His passing “is a monumental loss not only to his immediate family but also to the entire Foreign Service community and the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the ministry continued.
On Wednesday, Lele was laid to rest in Kano according to Islamic customs.
The ministry prayed for the peaceful rest of his soul and strength for those he left behind, sending condolences to his family, associates, the government, and the people of Bauchi State.
